Youth Media Workshops
Stan Bindell of the Hopi High Radio Journalism Project has organized two
days of great workshops for high school students who are radio
producers. NFCB received no funding to support this work so all youth
and adult leaders will have to pay full Community Radio Conference
registration fees. Full conference information, including registration,
hotel, and other info is at

Thursday April 2
Youth Media: Icebreakers
Paul Quamahongnewa, Hopi High Radio Program, Keams Canyon, Arizona
Natasha Naha, Hopi High Radio Program, Keams Canyon, Arizona
The icebreakers will give students a chance to meet other radio students
and learn a bit about them in fun ways.
9-10
Youth Media: Interviewing
Paul Quamahongnewa, Hopi High Radio Program, Keams Canyon, Arizona
Natasha Naha, Hopi High Radio Program, Keams Canyon, Arizona
Hopi High has the only live remote Native American teen talk show in the
nation and has won 18 awards in the past year from the Arizona
Interscholastic Press Association. Paul and Natasha will talk about how
they conduct interviews. The session will also provide one or two on
site interviews that the other students can critique. There may be a
working special "secret" Oregon guest as well.
10-10:15
Youth Media: Friday Night on KBOO
Everyone is invited to create radio pieces and discuss the broadcast on
Friday night on KBOO Community Radio. KBOO will also have production
rooms reserved for creating new content: recording interviews,
commentary, reviews, or editing during the conference. We will have
volunteers to help you with unfamiliar equipment and editing programs,
and to help with engineering and producing the radio show. The show
will air live on KBOO, 90.7fm, Friday April 3 from 6-8pm. All
participants will get copies of the radio show.
10:30-12
Youth Media: Trailblazing Radio or Leading Your Radio Group to
Superstardom
Johanna (Jones) Franzel, Generation PRX, Cambridge, Massachusetts
Telling stories means taking risks-asking questions, revealing your
creativity, and being honest and open about feedback. In this workshop,
we'll look at how to use these challenges to be a radio leader in the
digital age. First, we'll practice using PRX and especially the Audio
Exchange Project to give feedback. We'll workshop your stories and
figure out how to promote your piece once it's done. Next, we'll look
at how to be a leader in your own personal radio group-what do you do if
you get feedback you disagree with? How do you know someone is really
listening? How can you speak up even when you're uncomfortable? In
the end, you'll have tools for being a leader-and telling better
stories-online and in real life. Participants are asked to bring CDs of
their own work - either in progress, or recently completed.
1:30-3
Youth Media: Raising Funds for Trips and Equipment
June Fox, DEI, Great Falls, Virginia
Fundraising for youth radio programs can be challenging AND fun!
Whether you need to buy equipment or raise cash for training or travel,
there are lots of options... both traditional and 'so not'. June will
begin with the basics and then spend time brainstorming ideas for your
next fundraising event(s). You'll finish the session with your hands
full of ideas, and the know-how to get them done.
3:30-5
Youth Media: Storytelling in Sound and Pictures
Youth Radio/Youth Media International, Berkeley, California
This is a crash course in multi-media storytelling that offers training
in field production (gathering narrative sound in the field and
producing audio snapshots) and basic photography composition and
storytelling through photos. Participants will combine audio and visual
narrative and package it for the web (and publish it!) This is a great
introduction to the art of producing "snapshots" for radio and web in
line with the type of content leading journalism outlets such as the New
York Times are producing to keep up with the multi-media landscape. It's
also an opportunity to explore and find interesting people and sounds in
Portland, Oregon. You'll follow up all day tomorrow producing what you
gathered.
Friday
9-5
Youth Media Workshop: Storytelling in Sound and Pictures
Youth Radio/Youth Media International, Berkeley, California
Producing the material you gathered in the workshop yesterday. This is
an all-day workshop.
