Hi all...
We here at the KBOO Youth Collective have experimented with this kind
of thing, and here's what has worked best.
I like the 5 day 3 hours intensive the best. It gives kids a chance to
focus, to work hard, and to see the end.
We start with a general concept, and aim for making an hour long show,
but if it is not quite an hour, I will work with the teacher/community
coordinator to fill the hour. This is something like "Peer
Education", can be the particular topic of the funder that we got
special funding for (Grant People!) or the theme of the community
group (Homeless Youth, Art, etc.)
Also, if we are lucky, we have some per-requisites set up for the
kids, so they have thought about the topic and are thinking about
ideas before they get in. This could also be done as an application.
The Pre-Req stuff is what we use if we are giving stipends.
Day One (This is out in the community, at the school or community space):
Introductions/ exercises
Listen to examples of Radio
Touch the equipment and learn how to use it by interviewing each other
Go Outside with the equipment and learn about wind noise, traffic
noise, and how the mic works
Listen to what was recorded both inside and outside. Hopefully this
will prevent major mistakes when they're working on real interviews
the next day.
If time, general brainstorming about specific topics that they want to cover.
Day Two (This is out in the community, at the school or community space):
Discussion about what they're going to do.
Give out equipment, and send them out to do it.
Some kids need help writing, some brainstorming, some want to be tech,
so they begin experimenting with Digital Editing. Really random, but
also really fun. Also tiring.
Day Three (this is at KBOO):
Discussion on where things are, what they need to do, and what tools
they need to do it.
Some kids will be doing phone interviews this day, some kids editing,
some back out in the world with vox pop, and other things, too.
Day Four (KBOO):
A Day much like Day 3, except everyone is editing or writing and
recording narration. Someone is usually ahead, and that person can be
identified to write the narration that strings all the pieces
together. Very Fly-By-The-Seat-Of-Your-Pants kind of day.
Day Five (KBOO).
Finish!
We also have food and listen to all the pieces at the end of the day,
and then I will put it together with the whole group narration, and it
gets on the air or on the web within a week.
When this has worked well, we've had a 4/1 ratio of staff to kids, and
a max of 12 kids. I've done it with more, and also with less staff
help.
Please feel free to ask more specific questions, and Good Luck! It's
really fun! -Erin Yanke
