Stacy, Brian, Dina and others interested in radio

From Stan Bindell

I hope to help.
The
 first question is what type of radio you want to produce;
more specifically do you want to have your own radio station with low
wattage just at the school and nearby community or do you want to work
with a radio station that goes out to the community?

We work with
KUYI and so we are heard hundreds of  miles away in every direction.
KUYI, like most radio stations,
is streaming on line so we are heard literally throughout the world. We
have a teen talk show that includes news and interviews. We also
broadcast the football and basketball games.

If you want to link
up with a radio station, most National Public Radio (NPR) stations are
more open to it then commercial radio stations so I would hit them up
first. But you'll have to give
them a plan of what you want to broadcast.

If you want to have
your own radio station at the school, you have to contact the FCC. Last
time I looked, you didn't need a license for a low wattage station. If
you want a larger wattage station, you would have to apply to the FCC.

In either event, I would suggest contacting the following people in the radio industry:
*Jones
Franzel at PRX. She has already responded. You might start by  having
students post audio on prx. This is a good way for students to work on
their voice and if they are good then adio stations from all over the
country may play their pieces.

*Brett at Youth Radio from California. His email is attached.

*June Fox with DEI work site, which helps radio stations get started. Her email is attached.

*Corporation of Public Broadcasting. Gregg Schnirring for questions about startup. He at least can let you know who to contact.

My
 radio students
will be presenting about our radio program at noon on Saturday April 14
in Seattle. This will be a chance to learn about our program and see
how you want to do things differently.

The book we use, which many universities use, is TV and Radio Announcing by Stuart Hyde.

I will be glad to field any other questions.....Thanks....Stan Bindell, Hopi High

Someday, the youth resources we have will be available for the
grownups... maybe sooner than later as I have just taken over the
Interim Program Director Position at KBOO! I'm pretty swamped right
now with the learning curve, but I am thrilled! -Erin
