Hi all!
I taught an urban education course a couple years ago at UC Berkeley,
and here are some of the texts that went over especially well:
Kelley, R. 1998: Yo Mama’s DysFUNKtional: Fighting the Culture Wars
in Urban America. Boston: Beacon Press.
hooks, b. 1994. Teaching to transgress: education and the practice of
freedom. New York: Routledge.
Delpit, L. 1988. The Silenced Dialogue: Power and Pedagogy in
Educating Other People’s Children. Harvard Educational Review, 58:
280-298. (A MUST!)
Ladson-Billings, G. 1994. The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of
African American Children. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass.
Mahiri, J. 2003. What they Don’t Learn in School: Literacy in the
Lives of Urban Youth. Peter Lang.
Ariki Varney, J. 2001. Undressing the Normal: Community Efforts for
Queer Asian and Asian American Youth. In Troubling Intersections of
Race and Sexuality: Queer Students of Color and Anti-Oppressive
Education. Lanham, MD: Rowman and Littlefield.
Fleetwood, N. 2005. Authenticating practices: Producing realness,
performing youth. In. S. Maira and E. Soep (Eds.). Youthscapes: the
popular, the national, the global, 155-172. Philadelphia: University
of Pennsylvania Press.
For youth media writing, check out David Buckingham, Brian Goldfarb,
Henry Jenkins, Steve Goodman, and Glynda Hull.
There's a great new book out called Beyond Resistance! Youth Activism
and Community Change, edited by Cammarota, Ginwright, and Noguera.
And here comes the shameless self promotion (apologies in advance!).
I've written a bunch about youth media and Youth Radio (including
some co-authored stuff with Youth Radio colleagues and graduates).
You can find specific references on our blog,
www.dropthatknowledge.wordpress.com (accessible through YR's website,
in the blog section). And I'm working on a book with Vivian Chavez
that'll be coming soon from UC Press.
Thanks for all the other great references folks have shared!
